Georgia Introduction:
Georgia has a land area of 69700 square kilometers and is located in the central western part of the South Caucasus. It is bordered by Russia in the north, Azerbaijan in the southeast, Armenia in the south, Türkiye in the southwest, and the Black Sea in the west. Its geographical location is very important. It is the gateway to Europe from the Caucasus and Central Asia. It is a must for the ancient Silk Road and the modern Eurasian corridor, and one of the important countries along the “the Belt and Road”. Therefore, Georgia is an important entrepot trade country. 80% of port goods and 60% of railway transport goods are entrepot goods. Ge has two excellent deep-water ports, Poti and Batumi, in the western Black Sea, as well as two pipeline oil terminal ports, Kulevi and Supasa, which provide great transportation advantages.
Georgia has distinct four seasons and a pleasant climate, known as the “backyard of God”. It is a world-renowned tourist destination and also the hometown of former Soviet leader Stalin.
In April 2025, Georgia’s GDP increased by 7.5% year-on-year, and the total foreign trade in January and February 2025 reached 3.568 billion US dollars, a year-on-year increase of 15.6%. And in recent years, abundant oil and gas resources have been discovered in the western, eastern, and Black Sea regions of Georgia, bringing new growth points to the Georgian economy. China is one of Georgia’s three major trading partners and has been the largest source of imports for Georgia for several consecutive years.
Market opportunities:
On June 14, 2000, Georgia officially became a member of the World Trade Organization and enjoyed preferential tariffs on most favored nation treatment with other WTO member countries. In May 2017, China and Georgia signed the Free Trade Agreement between the Government of the People’s Republic of China and the Government of Georgia, which is the first free trade agreement between China and countries in Eurasia, and also the first free trade agreement reached by China after the “the Belt and Road” initiative was put forward. After the agreement came into effect, Georgia immediately implemented zero tariffs on 96.5% of our products, covering 99.6% of Georgia’s total imports from China. In 2023, Georgia will become a candidate country for the European Union and implement tax-free policies with the 27 member states of the EU. Thus, Georgia now has a tax-free or very low tax market covering a population of 2.4 billion, providing great advantages for its trade and creating enormous possibilities for building it into an important logistics, transportation, and communication center for Eurasian countries. The company established in the Georgia Special Economic Zone is exempt from all taxes except individual income tax. After deep processing in the special economic zone, Chinese products can obtain the certificate of origin in Georgia, and can be exported to Europe, the Commonwealth of Independent States and Türkiye without customs duties. In the current situation of “de Sinicization” in Europe and America, Chinese enterprises can not only avoid high tariffs in Europe and America by transshipping to Georgia, but also facilitate better circulation of goods in the EU. Therefore, Georgia will become an important transit trading partner of China.
